Brenda Davis, registered dietitian, is a leader in her field and an internationally acclaimed speaker. As a prolific nutrition and health writer, she has co-authored 11 books with over 800,000 copies in print in 14 languages. Her most recent works include Kick Diabetes Essentials (2019), The Kick Diabetes Cookbook (2018), Becoming Vegan: Comprehensive Edition (2014) and Becoming Vegan: Express Edition (2013). Brenda has been a featured speaker at medical and nutrition conferences in over 20 countries on 5 continents. She is also co-author of several peer reviewed journal articles. Brenda is the lead clinical nutrition specialist for the diabetes intervention project in the Marshall Islands, and recently completed a lifestyle intervention demonstration program in Lithuania. Brenda is a past chair of the Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Description: This webinar examines the link between diet and type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. We will review current research that demonstrates the power of whole food plant-based nutrition in treating type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. This discussion will challenge many of the commonly held beliefs about diabetes, including the optimal quantity and sources of macronutrients. It provides a blueprint for designing a diet that offers the most effective strategy for complete and prolonged remission of this disease.

1. Describe the benefits of optimizing function and physical activity among older adults.
2. Discuss how the risk of sedentary behavior is often outweighs the risk of physical activity.
3. Review recommendations and evaluations for older adults in terms of function and physical activity.
4. Explain ways to motivate individuals based on their motivation, preferences, and goals.

Barbara Resnick, PhD, CRNP
Professor @University of Maryland School of Nursing
Barbara Resnick, PhD, CRNP is a Professor in the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, co-directs the Biology and Behavior Across the Lifespan Research Center of Excellence, holds the Sonya Ziporkin Gershowitz Chair in Gerontology, and does clinical work at Roland Park Place. Her research program is focused on optimizing function and physical activity among older adults and testing implementation of interventions in real world settings. Dr. Resnick has over 250 published articles, numerous chapters in nursing and medical textbooks, and books on Restorative Care and Resilience. She is the editor of Geriatric Nursing, an associate editor and on editorial board for numerous journals. She has held leadership positions in multiple organizations including Presidency of the American Geriatrics Society and the Gerontological Society of America and has been recognized for numerous national awards.
